Staying Safe on the Streets and Commuting in Our Community
We want everyone to feel safe and secure when they’re out and about in our community. Whether you’re walking to work, cycling to the shops, or taking the train to another part of the city, we’ve got some tips to help you stay safe.
Tips for Walking
- Always be aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts.
- If something doesn’t feel right, cross the street or change your route.
- Walk with confidence, and make eye contact with other people you encounter. This will show that you’re aware of your surroundings and can deter potential attackers.
- Stay on well-lit streets, and avoid alleyways and other poorly lit areas.
- Keep your phone and other valuables out of sight, and don’t wear headphones or earbuds that could distract you from your surroundings.
- If you’re walking home late at night, try to walk with a friend or co-worker.
Tips for Cycling
- Wear a helmet, and make sure your bike is properly maintained.
- Always lock your bike, and try to park it in a well-lit area.
- Follow traffic rules, and use hand signals to indicate your intentions to other road users.
- Be alert for drivers who may not be paying attention, and stay out of their blind spots.
- If you’re cycling at night, use lights and reflective clothing to increase your visibility.
Tips for Commuting
- Keep your belongings close, and be aware of your surroundings.
- If possible, sit near the driver or conductor, especially at night.
- Stay alert for pickpockets or other thieves who may try to steal your wallet, phone, or other valuables.
- If someone is making you uncomfortable, try to move to a different seat or carriage.
- Make sure you know your route and the stops you’ll be taking, and get off at the right stop.
We hope these tips will help you stay safe on the streets and while commuting in our community.
Remember, if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to seek help from a passerby or call emergency services.
Together, we can help make our community a safer place for everyone.
