About Germiston
Germiston, also known as kwaDukathole, is a small city in Gauteng, South Africa, that has been administratively part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since its inception in 2000. It serves as Ekurhuleni’s municipal seat, housing the municipal council and administration.
Germiston Infrastructure
Roads
Germiston is well-connected to the Greater Johannesburg region's five major freeways or motorways. These include the M2 motorway, which connects to the southern Johannesburg CBD, the N3 Eastern Bypass, and the N12 South to the west of Germiston; the N17 and N3 to the south, and the N12 East and R24 to the north.
Railways
Germiston, as a mining and industrial city, is served by passenger rail, and the CBD has several stations, the most important of which is Germiston Station. Rail spurs and stations serve the industrial areas, and Transnet has a large depot north of the CBD on Keswick Road.
Airports
Germiston is also the location of Rand Airport, at one time one of the busiest in Africa and the southern hemisphere. Today it caters largely for light aircraft and flying schools, but is also home to the South African Airways Museum. As a result of this, two of the earlier Boeing 747 Jumbo aircraft used by SAA now reside there on permanent display.
Healthcare
Bertha Gxowa Hospital, a public state hospital, serves Germiston. Life Roseacres Hospital in Primrose is another private hospital.
Education
The city's oldest high school is part of the combined St Catherine's School, an independent Catholic school founded in the city center in 1908 by the Dominican Sisters under the leadership of Mother Rose Nyland. In the 1940s, the school was relocated to Piercy Avenue in the Parkhill Gardens suburb of Parkhill Gardens. It is now regarded as one of Gauteng's leading private schools. Germiston High School was established in 1917 alongside Victoria Lake; from the 1940s to 1963, the girls attended Germiston Girls' High School on Fourth Avenue in Lambton, while the boys remained on the 1917 campus as Germiston Boys' High School.
The girls were relocated back to merge with the boys in the old historic buildings in 1964 due to the necessity of moving the Afrikaans Delville Primary School. In 2017, the institution commemorated its 100th year. Dr. Sydney Brenner, the 2002 Nobel Prize recipient, is one of Sydney's well-known former students.
One of the best school cadet bands to compete and march in South Africa was the Germiston Boys' High School band, which was well-known throughout the country. The accomplishments of this cadet band are unmatched in the annals of South African school cadet bands. The band began to have success in 1952, and it continued through at least 1964. The band frequently scored an overall average of 99 percent. (Performance in music, ensemble playing on the drums, bugle, and trumpet, as well as drill, dress, and behaviour rules).
For a period of years, the school was home to a thriving, sizable music center that had grown primarily as a result of the late George Burgess' efforts. The many jazz and concert bands that emerged from the music center made a number of long-playing albums, took home prizes at numerous Eisteddfods and national contests, and made television appearances. Regrettably, the music center had to close because of financial cuts within the school department. The school still appreciates the choir's superb singing.
The rowing club is still thriving, and both men and women compete at all the school regattas. The club won the South African National Championships in 1980.
